With respect.
Regarding horses, it is the human intervention that's created their dependence on us. Their dependence does not mean that they are happy. A horse in the wild will graze over many miles, with others. They build a pecking order within that herd, each one having it's place. We in our wisdom keep them in small spaces, with limited grazing, we make the decision on who is their companion, if indeed they have the luxury of a companion. They develop what are called in the equine world, "vices" these include being disobedient when being ridden, rearing, bucking. Stable vices including weaving, this is where a horse will stand at the field gate or stable door shifting his weight from side to side often swinging his head. Cribbing, biting any woodwork or other item. Box walking, the horse walks round and round in circles.
There are many more. The primary cause is that we keep them in unnatural situations, and while they might outwardly look a picture of health, these vices only go the show the mental torment that they are enduring. Many do not show such symptoms, they become depressed, this can often be interpreted as a quite horse. There are many inventive gadgets on the market to correct and control these vices. We, the humans, the more intelligent, should perhaps look and observe at an animals natural life style and before taking on the responsibility of another living creature ask our self if we can provide that environment.
On the other side of the coin, there are SOME horses that do live happily in a controlled environment.
