I've just returned from that area, all the previous info is correct. However allow up to 15 minutes delay when you come into Rethimno from Xania...the national highway eastwards is CLOSED for major works for about 2kms and there is a diversion in force. The diversion brings you back onto the eastbound highway a few kms before the Spili/Ag Galini turning, which is what you want. Hope this helps.
