- Thanks for that Tim. The enscription is in Greek (obviously!) and I have no idea what it means. You are right that it looks quite a new memorial. I have passed it many times and wondered. The other interesting part of your reply is about the submarines. I think that one of the submarines used in the evacuation was renamed after having sunk in Liverpool Bay. She was on sea trials and failed to submerge. Numerous people lost their lives and eventually she was salvaged. She was renamed and I think served in the Med. After having quite an illustrious career she was eventually sunk in action in the Med, somewhere near Athens I think.
I live near to Birkenhead, where she was built, and have taken an interest in her 'career'. As an after-thought the BBC produced a play based on the subs sea trials. It lasts 45mins and is one of the most heart wrenching plays I have ever listened to. It was recorded onboard HMS Oynx, (Falklands war veteran) for authenticity of banging doors etc. Sorry to go on so much. And no I'm not really an 'anorak' just interested in the links between my home area and the area of Crete that I enjoy. Regards Paul.
