Hi Tim, don't you think that Beevor spends too much time distancing the British from any repercussions carried out by the Nazis?

He makes the point that the Anoghia atrocities and those in Amari (too late according to Beevor) had nothing do with the Kreipe kidnap, calling this a "canard" but that. at least in part, contradicts the quoted statement from Muller in his book:

"...and since the abductors of General Kreipe passed through Anoyia, using Anoyia as a stopping place when transporting him, we order its razing to the ground and the execution of every male Anoyian who is found within the village and an area of one kilometre around it" (General Muller from "Crete: The Battle and the Resistance"

Personally, I'd say that the Nazis needed very little excuse to commit atrocities. It was after all an atrocious doctrine, and that the kidnapping of Kreipe was an excellent plan that may have backfired slightly, but Beevor does protest too much at times, don't you think?

All the best
SJ
