- I have found a reference to Saktouria in which the village was "burnt to the ground" in 1944 as a result of a shipment of arms arriving on the "coded beach X25". Perhaps the memorial pertains to this. The info. is from the book "The Fortress Crete 1941-1944", by George Harokopos. The author was involved in the kidnapping of General Kreipe, & has written a book about that episode as well. Don't know if this is of any help or not.
