Tthe Municipality of Gortys is located on the south of Iraklion. It is surrounded by the municipalities of Rouva, Agia Varvara, Kofinas and Moires. Its southern part ends at the Libyan sea whith some of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. It extends over an area of 5,837,000 sq.m with a population of approximately 16,000 people. It comprises the ex communities of Agios Kyrilos, Agioi Deka, Ampelouzos, Apesokari, Vagionia, Vasiliki, Vasilika Anogia, Gagales, Mitropolis, Mimou, Platanos, Plora, and Houstouliana with aroun 23 Villages and settlements. The seat of the Municipality is the village Agioi Deka with 1000 inhabitants located 45 km away from Iraklion on the road Iraklion - Festos. There is a doctor's office, chemist (pharmacy), shops, Super Markets, restaurants and cafes. Sights There is plenty of places of natural beauty especially near the Asteroussia mountain range. Small valleys and ravines, numerous unspoilt beaches (Trahoula, Trypiti, Dysikos...), and finally the small coastal village of Lendas where some tourist facilities can be found. There is ofcourse the archaelogical site of Gortys which gave the name to the municipality.
