There are twenty rooms- galleries on the ground and first floors and the usual visit takes at least two hours but , of course, several days are necessary for the visitor who wishes to linger and study more carefully the exhibits, which cover a period of 5,000 years, from neolithic era to Graeco Roman period. The exhibits, collected from excavations carried out in all parts of Crete, come mainly from the prehistoric era (which takes its name from the legendary Cretan king,Minos) and form a valuable record of the artistic, social and economic life of the island during the ancient period. |
| The permanent exhibition is closed to public since November 2006, due to renovation works that had to be done to the building both for the protection of the items as well as for their better presentation and display. The exhibition will probably reopen in 2010. Meanwhile, visitors who want to admire the masterpieces of the museum's collection can visit the Temporary exhibition housed in a 350 sq.m. new building at Hatzidaki St., which is built to house the museum's administrative services in the future. The temporary exhibition houses the most famous and representative items of the collection, such as the Prince of the Lilies' fresco, the Phaistos Disc, the snake goddesses, the bull’s head, the frescoes of "Bull Leaping", "La Parisienne" and many more. |
